Occupational Therapist
Occupational Therapists help people to overcome challenges associated with long-term health conditions, such as injury, major surgery, aging, mental health, and learning disabilities. Career Progression:
Becoming a Care Worker is a great first step within the Health and Social Care Industry. Care Workers can progress to the role of Senior Care Worker by gaining on-the-job experience in different settings and situations. Newly Qualified Social Workers (NQSW) in Wales must complete the Consolidation Programme as part of the Continuing Professional Education and Learning (CPEL) Framework for Social Workers. After gaining experience as a Social Worker you can gain additional accreditations to become an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP), Team Manager, and then Middle Manager. Other roles that you could move into include Child Protection Officer or an Independent Living Reviewer.
Nurse
Nurses provide medical care to patients in hospitals, at home, and in a range of other settings such as prisons, schools, and pharmacies. They work closely with and support doctors and surgeons. There are four main specialisms within nursing: Adult, Paediatric (Children's), Mental Health, and Learning Disabilities. Nurses provide essential expertise and services to the NHS, helping to keep us all healthy and well.
Level 2 Health and Social Care
This is a course for people who are new to Health and Social Care Sector. This is a full-time course which usually takes one year to complete. You will be assessed via scenario-based assessments and multiple-choice tests.
Applied Human Biology - Extended Certificate
You can apply directly to this course is you have five or more GCSEs grade A* - C, or if you have completed a level 2 qualification in Biology or Health & Social Care. This is a full-time course which usually takes one year to complete. You may need to undertake an additional A-level alongside this programme if you intend to go to university. You should aim to achieve a minimum of MM (merit, merit) if you hope to go to university. Alternatively you could complete an Extended Diploma in Applied Science which would normally be accepted by a university in lieu of 3 A-levels.
Bachelor of Nursing (Child) BN
A Bachelors degree will normally take three years to complete. You should study a Bachelors Degree which is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as it will make it easier for you to gain professional registration as a Registered Nurse after you graduate. This is a regulated profession, therefore you must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to practice as a nurse. If you don't have the right A-level or BTEC grades you may be able to complete an Access to HE Diploma or a Foundation Year at university to access this course.
3 A-levels
Most universities will ask for BBC grades at A-level to study Nursing. Some universities may require that one of your A-levels be in Biology. Useful A-level choices for a career in Nursing include Psychology, Sociology and Sciences. You will be assessed via exams and coursework in most A-levels. You may need to complete Essential Skills Wales (ESW) qualifications in English, Numeracy and Digital, if you do not have relevant GCSEs.

Jobs Growth Wales+ Engagement Strand
This is a flexible programme offered by Careers Wales that allows you to take the first step to becoming employed in the Health and Social Care industry. You will work towards objectives that you agree in an Individual Learning Plan. You can complete a range of work experience and training activities on the Engagement Strand. There is no minimum number of hours but you can complete up to 21 hours per week. You will be entitled to claim a training allowance of up to £30 per week for attending depending on the number of hours you complete.
Jobs Growth Wales+ Advancement Strand
This is a flexible programme offered by Careers Wales that allows you to take the next step to becoming employed in the Health and Social Care industry after completing the Engagement Strand. You will work towards objectives that you agree in an Individual Learning Plan. You can complete a range of work experience and training activities on the Advancement Strand. You will need to complete between 16 and 30 hours per week. You will be entitled to claim a training allowance of up to £55 per week for attending depending on the number of hours you complete.
Jobs Growth Wales+ Employment Strand
This is a flexible programme offered by Careers Wales that allows you to take the final step to becoming employed in the Health and Social Care industry after completing the Advancement Strand. You will work towards objectives that you agree in an Individual Learning Plan. You will complete a 6 month internship on the Employment Strand. You will need to complete between 16 and 30 hours per week. You will earn a salary paid at least at the National Minimum Wage (NMW).

Career Progression:
Non-Registered Support Staff (NRSS) can become registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to become a Registered Nurse or Registered Associate Nurse. From here Nurses can specialise in Adult, Paediatric (Children's), Mental Health, or Learning Disabilities by completing a Masters Degree or other postgraduate qualification approved by the NMC. Nurses can also progress laterally into a career as a Midwife or become a Nursing Manager.
